Hammers and Phones

Ideas are important at Worldview at the Abbey. They are discussed in class, debated over meals, all as we try to take seriously Paul’s admonition in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “take every thought captive to obey Christ.” This simple admonition is a reminder that ideas influence us. They will shape our thoughts, words, and actions once they have been adopted and allowed to root into our minds. However not all ideas are straightforward, and some are even hidden from view unless carefully discerned.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas…

My visit at the dentist ended with the receptionist turning to her coworker and proclaiming, “What’s with this music! (speaking of the muzak that permeates the background of workspaces throughout America)  Where is the Christmas music? We need Christmas music!” I concurred but with the caveat, “Just as long as every third song is not Mariah Carey singing, ‘All I Want for Christmas is You.’”  We all chuckled.

Don’t Get Banksy-ed!

The art world was all atwitter earlier this month after an acclaimed, but anonymous, street artist known simply as Banksy set a Sotheby’s Auction House record for selling one of the artist’s paintings for $1.4 million.  However, what set the art world a buzz was, that as soon as the auctioneer’s gavel fell closing the sale, the painting seemed to come to life and partially shredded itself to the astonishment of those in attendance.

Life in an Asymmetric Universe

“While evangelizing, my students were asked the question, “if there were not evil in the world, would we really appreciate the goodness?” The person argued that evil is necessary and beneficial to recognize the worth of goodness. To their credit, if you imagine a world without evil, it would seem difficult to see the goodness – because you would be swimming in it. Goodness is quite visible in this world due to the contrast it provides to evil. But is evil a prerequisite for good? Does evil need to exist for us to appreciate goodness? On the contrary, goodness can and does exist without evil.”
